New Light

New Light, a solo exhibition by local photographer John Shinn opens Saturday, November 14th at MING Studios. Shinn presents a selection of images from his ongoing collection, New Light, in photographic and projected formats.
Shinn’s images objectify his subjects within the confines of a cinematic framework. Through reference to the genres of mystery and science fiction, he makes use of purposeful contradictions that exhibit the alienation of the natural world under the blanket of a filmic utopia. The collection of images unanimously locates their subject matter center stage, void of action, narrative or implication. Rather, the images capture stillness, and the gulf between perception and the `thing in itself.´
New Light is John Shinn’s debut solo exhibition. In 2012 he received a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Visual Art from Boise State University. Shinn was awarded a grant from the Idaho Commission on the Arts (ICA) in support of his exhibition at MING Studios.
