THE ISLAND OF DOUBT
September 21 - November 9, 2024
OPENING RECEPTION Saturday, September 21st, 7PM ARTIST TALK Thursday, October 24, 6-8PM In The Island of Doubt, Veiko Valencia creates devotional objects such as shrines, altars, and relics by combining and adapting found objects with painting. He views these devotional objects as revealers of the foundations of things, showing how what makes them secure is also what makes them fragile. For Valencia, these objects of devotion are temporary forms of support; they are both needed and not. They act as retrievers, asking us to find successes within failures in the ordinary world. Born in Arequipa, Peru, and now based in Boise, Idaho, Valencia merges observational painting and drawing with spontaneous experimentation using found objects. He approaches his art with a blend of playfulness and thoughtful reflection, integrating traditional techniques with ironic choices. His work often appears perpetually in progress, constantly exploring without a predetermined direction. veiko.art |
