POP-UP EXHIBITION

Boise PhotoGrid
October 2-18, 2025

OPENING RECEPTION  Thursday, October 2, 7PM

ARTISTS  Shawna Donahue, John Francis, Amy Jauregui, Karl Henke, Ben Huynh, Emma Hood, Michal Temkin Martinez, Weston McGhee, Castille Miller, Gregg Mizuta, Jason Natzke, Lukas Robertson, Christina Rouse, Jason Sievers, Patrick Sweeney, Chanel Talbot, Tran Tran

The Boise PhotoGrid project includes 18 Boise-based photographers. Organized by John Francis, the project began in February 2025 with the goal of creating a visual archive that captures Boise at this moment in time, in recognition of the rapid changes taking place across the city.

Boise was mapped into a grid of 42 sections, each approximately 1.7 square miles. Each month, the photographers randomly select one square and take photographs within its parameters. Grid by grid, the city is being recorded, one month at a time. The project is expected to span about three and a half years and will cover both Boise and Garden City.

This community of street, documentary, and fine art photographers are keeping a visual collection of Boise as it transforms and develops. Once all 42 grids have been completed, the project will likely start over, this time with new faces and their visual interpretations of a city that continues to grow and change.

conscious, fostering an opportunity for self-reflection and change.
He’s driven by the desire to hold space for people. Sharing his experiences to create

TRAN TRAN GRID:A2
TRAN TRAN

"I’m Tran Tran, a photographer and graphic designer originally from Vietnam and now based in the U.S. I moved here 16 years ago and earned my BFA in Graphic Design from Boise State University. Along the way, I fell in love with photography—it started as a class but quickly became a passion. My early studies in photography at CWI and BSU led to a grant to document history in Europe for the BSU museum, deepening both artistic practice and cultural perspective. Today, I freelance while running my family business, using photography to share stories and celebrate culture. My dream is to one day exhibit work honoring my roots and community.

His curiosity drives him to see the world differently and continually expand the mediums in which he creates. At heart, he is a conceptual studio photographer with a passion for challenging our perception of gravity, self, and the human form. Castille’s creative pursuits also extend into writing, culinary arts, sculpture, and design, as he believes all of our senses crave creation, and there are many ways to appeal to them.

AMY JAUREGUI GRID:F5
AMY JAUREGUI

Amy is a lifelong Boisean and a member of the Basque diaspora.  While accounting, budgeting and finance has occupied her day to day work, she also has a keen interest in art, design and music which has translated to being a former music major and an amateur photographer.  Amy loves exploring and this project has been the perfect venue for exploration. Always on the lookout for the new and different, this project has been an excellent way to see the area in a new light.  As a lifelong resident sometimes it is difficult to see the new in the familiar but this project is bringing the nooks and crannies of Boise to light.
Picture
MICHAL MARTINEZ "Before and After" GRID:E5
MICHAL MARTINEZ

Michal Temkin Martinez has been exploring photography since 2015, diving deep into the craft in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic when taking photos of nature became a good reason to step away from her computer. As a professor of linguistics, she finds photography offers a different way of communicating—one that captures stories and emotions through visual narrative rather than words. Michal is drawn to moments in nature and everyday scenes, with a particular love for photographing flowers. Photography, and especially participating in Boise PhotoGrid, has become her way of slowing down and really seeing the world around her.
Picture
